I am interested in a 30 gallon octagon aquarium that is going to be at an auction next weekend. I haven't seen it but I assume it's a tower type. Does anyone have one of these? I was just wondering what your experiences were with them and also, what type of fish do you have in it? I assume if it is a tower, the fish I would get would have to be ones that wouldn't get too big. Also, assuming it comes with all the needed supplies and equipment, what would a new one cost? I've looked online for one but never found a 30 gallon that was a tower type. I was just curious about how much I should bid.

I found a new 27 gallon hex listed at $83. I'd figure equipment (new) would be about $40+, depending on the brand, quality, and what might be included. Another $40-50 if there's a stand. Personally I wouldn't go over 3/4 of the estimated price new, and only of the tank holds water and equipment is in running condition.

I'd also believe this was taller than wide, so you'll have less surface area for oxygen exchange, so that will affet your stocking level - not as many fish for a rectangular tank of the same volume, plus the narrowness could eliminate the fast, active swimmers. I've always liked the taller tanks for angels, since thery're a "tall" fish. These also look good with tall pplants and driftwood, with a few schools of small fish - neons, rainbow fish, or other small with with bright color.

Good luck at the auction - I bought a couple of my tanks this way. Got a 29 gallon with all equipment for $20 at one auction and another 29 gallon full setup with a stand, diatom filter, and a pool liner (?) for $5. You might get a great bargain!

My mother has one :) She has a little school of neon tetra, 1 Male betta, 1 bottom feeder and a fancy gold fish ( goldfish needs to be bigger then your betta or your betta will nip at his fins) also keep it well planted (real plants are better)
I'm not sure if it's a 30G or not though but she payed $700.00 for hers
sorry if this didnt help ya :)
