What the stupidest feeling?

I think that nationalism/patriotism is the stupidest feeling ever. C'mon wtf. Its a freaking piece of land that you were born on. What do you owe it? Absolutely nothing. Thats why i hate people in the military. The useless idiots wasting their lives fighting for a piece real estate. It may be true that life maybe meaningless if one has no ideals, but patriotism????? LOLWTFOMGBBQ

edit: @johnslate: by hate i don't mean hatred. I love them as a human being but despise their choice of serving in the military.

gigigwen's reply especially sybolizes my hate for patriotism. People are so enamoured by their own values that they regard everyting else as "garbage." I'll admit that i'm sometimes like that, but i notice that "partriotic" people are more often like that in matters of politics etc.

I've seen a few really nice answers, but keep the opinions coming.

Many in the military believe they are fighting for democracy, as misguided as that may be.
As for me..hate and guilt are the most useless feelings. Many wars have been started because of mankind's inability to understand or tolerate one another. What a waste!!!!

Nationalism's a contender, for sure. But what could be more useless and stupid than regret over the past?
All the should haves, might haves, etc. are the most useless feelings possible since the past cannot be changed (despite what Jay Gatsby thought.)
But hating people in the military is ALSO a stupid (and useless) feeling. Most of those people are doing their best and they believe in what they're doing. Hating them doesn't make any sense. Oh, you can think they're wrongheaded and mistaken - and perhaps many of them sometimes think the same - but HATE???!!!!
Offhand, I'd say YOU have some issues that need to be dealt with.

Placed within the context you've given, I'd say the media-portrayed notion of patriotism is not so much stupid, as it is a guise under which extreme behavior, and many bad decisions occur. It's more an excuse than a feeling.
I'd have to say the most useless feeling is anticipation; what can it do constructively or productively? Nothing.

Yeah I suppose I agree. I think patriotism is just an excuse to start wars. Americans seem to be awfully patriotic. Us Canadians are a little more laid back about the whole thing...(I think most Canadians are more devoted to their beer & hockey teams than to the country itself. Personally I hate beer & sports so I guess I'm not a very patriotic Canadian! Ha ha. I have cried once when someone sang our national anthem very beautifully though & it is a beautiful country...)

"Oh Canada, our home & native land..."

You are falling for the secular progressive garbage. You are living in the only country on this planet where you are allowed the freedom to express your views. People have fought and died for you to have that right. If you don't like this "freaking" land, move some where else and see how many rights you have. Your view is a colander, doesn't hold water.

its not the land we fight for, its the values, its the culture, its our friends, our family, at the end of the day we fight for that which we cannot see, we fight for what our hearts believe is right, we fight for the future, for a better tomorrow. i myself do not support war, and would much rather prefer the world to be a bunch of hippies who just wanna love everything, but in reality this is not and will never be the case, so i have tryed to rationalize reasons for fighting as stated above.

Interesting. I find military personnel to be depressed, suicidal and have a death wish. Anyone who enlists is looking for a way to act out their aggression and look to put themselves in the way of bomb, missile or bullet.

There is nothing courageous about it.

i see
racialism
patriotism
sectarianism

to be the three most dangerous isms, and they are very much alike. We should be able to like our own group and still work with others but it seems these divisions do more harm than good.
