A number when multiplied by 5 is the same as the number added to five:

5x = 5 + x
4x = 5
x = 5/4 = 1 + 1/4

Now let's check that answer:

5 * (5/4) = 25/4 = 6 + 1/4
5 + (5/4) = (20 + 5)/4 = 25/4 = 6 + 1/4

Simple:
x+5 = x*5
<=>5 = 4x <=> x = 5/4

5/4+5 = 25/4
5/4*5 = 25/4

Let x be the number, then

5x = x + 5,

so 4x = 5 and x = 5/4 = 1.25

Note that 5*1.25 = 6.25, and 1.25 + 5 = 6.25, so it IS the solution !

The number is 1.25

Use simple algebra to answer this type of question. Let x be your unknown number, so:

5x = x+5
5x - x = 5
4x = 5
x = 5/4 or 1.25
