First it's socialism, not communism.
Second, the reason why people are turning a blind eye to it is because most urbanites have an expectation of safety and being "taken care of" that is only capable in a socialist society. They are more than willing to trade their rights for such "security" and are not educated enough to know what the price they will pay is.
It's a sad state of affairs, but the reason that both political parties are moving us closer to this is because in the old soviet system, the elite maintained their elite status and the rest were given a placebo of ideology to placate them.
We are going to need to completely change what is allowed by our politicians and stop them from destroying the way of life that we are supposed to be living.

We live in a society where, we are governed by the medias and broken government, as such, we (most of us), do not speak up, for fear of the consequences and the aftermath.
America is the "land of the free", but w/ frivolous lawsuits everywhere you turn and laws on how we as individuals should live and act in our own homes, we might as well become part of China, Cuba, Russia and all those communist countries. If so, we probably live in a more secured and balanced environment, because at least, we know what to expect.

Your friends the Brits have a socialist gov't. Do you find them to be horrible? I would suggest that you look up the meaning of communism since you seem to have the wrong idea.
