Depending where you are in San Francisco, about 30-40 minutes, San Carlos is about 25 miles south of San Francisco on Hwy. 101.
ps i l've lived in the area almost my whole life, and if you don't drive during commute hours, the above times are accurate. I commuted to the city by car for years from Menlo Park.

Well, I commute to SF from San Carlos each day on CALTRAIN because I can't STAND the traffic !!

The normal morning trains take 43 minutes, but I often grab a "Baby Bullet" in Redwood City which only takes 30 minutes to reach San Francisco.

I then also have a 10 minute bike-ride to my job.

BUT I don't have to search for parking or deal with traffic !!

The person who wrote 30-40 minutes has apparently NOT driven the 101 or 280 in years !! Once I drove with a friend... and it took us almost 70 minutes and it was AVERAGE traffic !!

I totally agree with your first answer. 70 minutes from San Carlos to San Francisco? No way, unless there's an accident or during rush hour traffic.
