I live where it gets really cold in the winter snow and ice.

Unless you want to use native fish (bass, bluegill, minnows, etc.), goldfish or koi would be the best - provided that the pond is at least 18" in the ground (goldfish) or 3' in the ground (koi). Goldfish will do better in a smaller pond, but if it's several hundred gallon, koi would be okay. You can expect goldfish to get 10-18", the koi can get over 3 feet.

Gold fish. Absolutely. They are very good cold water fish and easy to care for - just don't send them into main waterways as they turn into carp.

go to the petstore and buy those feeder goldfish. they're dirt cheap and very hardy. they'll survive the winter no problem.

i would get kois....but it can be a tad expensive
