A stringed instrument first used way back in history. It has relatives in India, china, and is in the same category as the stand up double bass used most often in jazz, and the giant harp we see today, as well as the piano. The different sizes are sometimes not violins, but violas, which are a deeper sound but played the same.
You get sound by plucking or or picking the strings or a horse hair bow is rubbed across the strings to produce sound.
