So what's the deal with that Richard Gere kiss? Are they that much fanatics over in India? And what's a kiss compared to an unhappy fellow who is allowed to throw boiling oil in the face of a woman (with hardly any punishment)? Aren't we talking about a whole lot of hypocrisy here?

Each to their customs! You have to be an Indian to understand this 'Hypocrisy'. You need to understand the difference between Democracy and Culture/Customs.

Just to illustrate how different cultures think differently, read below ....

Indian-style toilets are different from Western-style toilets. There is no provision for toilet paper, but there’s a lot of water involved. If you think that’s disgusting, 950 million Indians would retort that using toilet paper instead of water is disgusting!
