I don't have any websites for you. The geo-political environment of the past 50 years meant that the US had a vast stake in ensuring Taiwan's survival. For 30+ years after the civil war, we refused to recognize mainland China, and in fact, called Taiwan "China" in defiance of all the obvious realities. China sees Taiwan as simply a stray island, but the US continues to view Taiwan as a separate political entity. In my opinion, this time the US has gotten it right. The Taiwanese that I know don't view themselves as part of China but as a separate country. And the economic and geo-political reality is that they are indeed independent.

The U.S. gave enough money to Taiwan to make most people very well off. Just ask them. Who wouldn't prosper if the U.S. paid them all off.
