Now a day about 3 months average.

But in Foriegn markets the DVD will come out the same time the movie comes out and then there are low budget films that may go direct to video or get held up because no producer will take the film on.

It depends on how many people go to see it in the theaters. The better it does the longer it stays; but usually it takes about 2-3 months. I remember when I was younger it took like 3-5months for a movie to come out on tape.

It is true that the release window between theatrical release and home video release does vary, depending upon box office success (disappointing box office returns can usually assure a quick transition to DVD), or seasonal releases (i.e., a yuletide theatrical release, more than likely will not see home video release until the following year's yuletide season).

The average home video release window originally ranged between 8 to 10 months; obviously, that window has narrowed, over the years, to what it is today (approx. 3 to 4 months). Expect that window to narrow even more, as the motion picture home video distributors struggle to combat movie pirating and illegal downloads.

We may just get to the point where a first-run motion picture is simultaneously released on the big screen, on home video, and on the cable broadcast market.
