Yes, there is in fact a very well preserved steam locomotive exhibited in the National Museum of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur. It is within the Museum compound, near the exhibition of automobiles and transportation.

Here is a link of to the museum's website:

If I can clearly remember, there is also another one at the Shah Alam Museum (right next to the Shah Alam library), near the Shah Alam lake. Not too sure if it is a steam locomotive or not as I've not been there for quite some time... but I can assure you there are some antique vehicles there for exhibit.

Hope this helps and good luck!

A steam train also runs between Tanjung Aru and Papar in Sabah (Malaysian Borneo), every Wednesday and Saturday - JUST NOT this year... they are upgrading the track... it is an old English Volcan Engine that has been converted from coal to wood when it was brough here in the 20's or so. The carriages have all been done up to give that colonial feeling (in Sabah, that meant the carriages got a new coat of paint and some upholstery... they are otherwise still original 50's material!). But that's it, not this year!

At the State Museum in Kota Kinabalu there are also two or three steam engines exhibited (outside).
