I think the general consensus is that another planetoid smashed into the baby Earth early on in its development and that threw trillions of tons of matter out into space that formed rings around the globe for a while.
They eventually coalesced into the moon. The moon was originally a lot closer to the Earth than it is now. The dinosaurs would have thought (if they thought at all) that it took up half the sky and it is receding at a pace of around an inch a year which doesn't sound a lot but in a few thousand years, a total solar eclipse won't be as dramatic as it is now because the Sun and the Moon won't seem the same size.

Today, the giant impact hypothesis for forming the Earth–Moon system is widely accepted by the scientific community. In this hypothesis, the impact of a Mars-sized body on the proto-Earth is postulated to have put enough material into circumterrestrial orbit to form the Moon.

It's something that formed from pieces of rock after the meteor hit. And I've heard rumors that the moon doesn't exist, listen up people, the moon does exist.
