I see on the calendar that Monday is Bank Holiday in the UK. My friend in Scotland works for a life assurance company. Will that be open? I'd like to know if she'll get my email. What places do shut down for a bank holiday? And what's the history behind this holiday?

A "BANK HOLIDAY" is what an American calls a "Federal Holiday. It is holidays such as Presidents Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Veterans Day, Memorial Day, etc.

Most Banks and institutions are closed. a "holiday" in British English is an American "Vacation" while a 'Bank Holiday" is a British Federal Holiday
