I have a child that is blind and has c.p., The school district that we live in wouldn't put him in school because they didn't have the resources to teach him, so they tried to get him in the school for the visually impaired. They to turned my child down once they found out that he had hepititis c. I have contacted the Office of cival rights. They could not believe how big this case is. My child has been out of school for 5 months now and will be out all summer as well. My question is do I go public?

I would be documenting everything and the fact your kid has been out for 5 months is illegal. They are required to provide him an appropriate education in the least restrictive environment. There are health measures that can be put in place for the hepatitis C within the education system.
I would;ve been calling people at the district daily to get him an education as well as file complaints with your State Board of Education. Get the media involved or a good attorney and they change their tune really quick.

I would contact an educational advocate to help you get your child into an appropriate placement ASAP. It wouldn't hurt to also have an attorney on board. Any child, special needs or not, should not be out of school for five months. If nothing else, your school district should have provided tutoring for your child during this five month period of time.

I'm so sorry to hear of everything that's going on with your family with this issue. I would definately contact the ADA offices in your area. In addition --- your child has the right to a FAPE (Free & Public Education). I would also get an attorney involved.

I would think about how this is going to affect your child and family as well. Are you ready to be faced with media coverage and interviews and them coming over into your house and you and your family "living in a fish bowl"? I am not sure how big your community is but you might draw criticism for waiting so long....just a thought.

Of course a public outcry for the rights of child will always work. It is is right as a student to have an adequate education. And it is your right as a parent to protest and sue any one who gets in the way of it. Good luck and my best wishes to your child.

i would...that is what you would call discrimination. no matter how you look at it! if you want you child to go to a public school that system HAS to provide serives to you...why do you think we pay school taxes? for our kids to go to school! good luck and srry to hear about your son's disability!
