I have tried changing the BackGround property of the control but only get a light gray, I right clicked on the control to get more properties, still only light gray.

The backcolor property only effects the container of the tabs. The tabs themselves remain grey and do not have a backcolor property. So if you change the backcolor to something like vbRed you will only see red in the small area betwee the tab captions and the edges of the tabs along the border of the SSTab control.

If you want to play with windows handles and sub classing you can make the tabs show the same color as the backcolr of the SSTab container. (See link) Its not as easy as if there were a Tab Baccolor property but it is effective if you don't mind having everthing in the SSTab control the same color. (not placed controls)
