Find and disconnect the shifter cable at the tranny and see if you can put it in park by hand. Check before you disconnect it to see which way to move the lever on the tranny after its disconnected. Be sure to set the parking brake and chock the wheels first. If it goes in by hand then the prob is in the shift cable, shift tube in the steering column or the shift lever itself. Another posibility is the shift interlock solenoid plunger being stuck out and blocking the park notch. If it wont go in park by hand then the problem is inside the tranny.

You need to find out if the shifter is working. Craw under the truck and check linkage for damage. If OK, disconnect the linkage. Do Not Adjust The Linkage!!!! Make sure to mark its position and what gear you're in. Ask a friend to operate the shifter and make sure the cable operates smoothly. If the shifter goes through its full range of movement (Park to 1) you could have a TR sensor (Transmission Range) problem or an internal transmission problem. You can manually operate the TR sensor by counting the detentes (P, R, N, D, 2, and 1 = 6).
