I'm interested in building some scale model diaramas and want to know what I should use to construct the walls and such. My initial thought was making my own molds out of modeling clay and pouring plastic, but I don't know if this is the most cost efficient thing. Any thoughts?

One thing that's important to me is sturdyness... it has to be able to stand up to things. Also, ease of transport. If I need to ship or move it anywhere, I don't want to have to worry about it breaking.

When I was in high school shop class, we had to build scale models out of Balsa wood. Its easy to cut and hold together. As I recall, it was also pretty cheap.

To an extent... it would depend on the scale !!

I build many 1/35 armor dioramas... and for this I use poured plaster for brick or stone (setting molds out of Bass-wood), and also 1/8th inch thick plywood. I also carve bricks into the plaster with an awl and scribing tool... and if I wish to repeat the building, I use commercial molding-rubber.

On my N-scale model railroad (and HO clubs I work with) I use sheet Balsa or sheet styrene plastic.

Check around for a model Railroading store... they have styrene plastic in molded bricks, clapboard, and such... they also have scale I-beams, L-beams, and H-beams.

Good luck !!

You can use gypsum board. But for low expense you can make it in hard board and paste the-edges. You can also use plaster of Paris.
