...inside the womb, between check-up and u/s schedule?

As many first-time moms can't stop worrying about it, and not everyone can easily find/hear foetal heartbeat.

I know someone who's in this situation and I wonder if there's any other way to tell if everything's okay.

if its moving (and that depends on how many weeks gestation she is at), that should help reassure her a little. Also if she is not bleeding or anything, she has little cause to worry.

Unfortunately much of pregnancy is non eventful - baby just eats and sleeps and grows - but a lack of events in pregnancy is normal and probably good news

It all depends on how far along they are. The only real way to tell is how is mom feeling and what do the doctors see and hear. I have had 3 kids and just lost one at 2 months into the pregnancy. Watch the monitor during the check ups and ask 100 questions.

Foetal scanning can be undertaken as early as five weeks (although advancements are taking place as we speak). Your first trimester scan should be carried out at 12 weeks with the second taking place at 20. It is usually during the second trimester that abnormalities are searched for but just goggle the two scans or obstetric ultrasound for a more detail patient related info.
Good Luck

The only way is with an ultrasound machine, but he heartbeat is a very good indicator of a babies well-being. If its early into the pregnancy it will be hard to locate the heart beat. As the baby grows the heart beat is easier found. You can buy Doppler's like doctors and midwifes use if it's needed.

It depends on how far along - she can do kicks counts after 18 wks, but not fool proof until 28 wks.
Determine if she stil "feels pregnant" - if she loses all her feelings of it then something may have happen.
But since she is a first time mom, usually everything works out fine, just keep doing what your doing and be supportive of her worries and woes!

There's really no way to know other than having ultrasounds done. It IS really hard not having a window into the uterus to see that the fetus/embryo is doing alright. However, in time, there's fetal movement to help ease fears as well as the option of renting a fetal heart monitor to check the heart rate any time of day.

Depending on how far along she is. They sell baby dopplers in the departmetn stores for about $20. She could at least hear the heartbeat every day.

People generally think that when the baby starts kicking it shows things are OK. Can't remember exactly but I think this only happens in the second half of the pregnancy.

You can buy foetal heart monitors or rent one they like like microphones with mini speakers. Or any doubts call your midwife or out of hours service!
