He is a solid conservative. Republicans are desperate for one. That is why he and Newt are polling in the 20% plus range.
Guiliani is a liberal on many issues
McCain has sold out conservatives for years
Huckabee, Tommy Thompson are part of the Republican machine that are the problem
Conservatives want the border closed, immigration law enforced, taxes cut, and the like. The first one in the party that steps up and promises this and has a track record to back it up will win the whole thing.

It's a great question, Stephanie. (Gold star).
Fred Thompson would be far superior to the current clown. That wouldn't necessarily make him a good president, but hey, I have trouble imagining how we could do worse. Freddy Krueger--the character, not the actor who plays him--that could be worse. Maybe. Or probably it would be a toss.
The republican field is pretty thin on substance right now. I believe the american electorate will want to punish the GOP again they way the were punished in the congressional election. I was very disappointed John McCain had not won the 2000 nomination. The republicans would at least have had someone both competent and experienced. He has since appeared to sell his soul to Satan, tossing in with BJU and company. (Miscegenation is just hybrid vigor!)
The field is vast, if you check Wikipedia, and still more contestants are expected to enter the ring. It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.
Can Fred beat Hillary, Obama, or Edwards?
The nice thing about actors is that they have at least an inkling of an idea of how to behave on TV. Look up George Bush on YouTube. You'll wince.

If you had watched him on the o'reilly factor last night (friday may 4th) you could see that he would make an outstanding president, he is a very sensible intelligent guy who needs to stop waiting and put his hat in the ring before it is too late. After seeing him I think he would be the best person to be the next president out of all the candidates democrat or republican. Ohh and for the guy talking about eastwood being a bad actor he's doing much better as a director wouldn't you say didn't he just win an oscar? I would rather have an actor who actually runs for office than have one who just goes around criticizing those in office from the red carpet!

Steph, I just typed in Senator Fred Thompson on Yahoo and he has 3,700,000 hits. That should keep you reading for a bit.
Attorney, Actor, Federal Government, Local Government....a few of his accomplishments....If you listen to him speak and answers he gives...you just might be impressed.
As Bob Beckle (Dem Strategist) put it...Fred Thompson is the Democrats worst nightmare if he runs for president!

He was a successful attorney first, then he was a US Senator from Tennessee.
In his first movie, he played himself. The movie was called "Marie".
It starred Sissy Spacek in the true story of a woman named Marie Ragghianti who was fired as chair of the Tennessee Board of Pardons and Parole in 1977 because she would not stand for the selling of pardons by the governor's staff.
She hired Fred Thompson to sue the governor for wrongful dismissal and won the case.

He served in the U.S. Senate from 1994 to 2003. Before that, he was a successful attorney and Washington lobbyist. So there is a lot more substance to the man than just playing an attorney on TV

I like him because I've taken the time to check out his accomplishments as a politician. He was just as tough on crime in real life.
I also listen to what his views are when he's being interviewed.
Why not google him and read? Why not listen to him and learn where he's coming from?

Your question does not make any sense! What has any of the candidates done to make you think they would make good presidents. After all, Jimmy Carter was only a peanut farmer and look at how he screwed up the county. Fred Thompson needs an equal opportunity. After all is said and done, the ONE that the voters choose HAS ACCOMPLISHED--------WINNING THE ELECTION. IF HE/SHE HAS ALL THE QUALIFICATIONS TO RUN AND IS ELECTED, THAT'S ALL THE ACCOMPLISHMENT THEY NEED. COMPRENDO?

Fair question. maybe his only accomplishment that impresses me is that he has better things to do than run for president for two solid years.
I've decided not to vote for anyone who has announced this early just out of principle.

Perhaps his successful stint as a US Senator?
It's important to remember that acting is Thompson's second career. He's been involved in state and national politics for decades.
