Well, the easiest answer is of course, Oil.
But if you observe closely, US now has many strategic reasons to stay in Iraq, eventhough doing so would cost US its soldiers.
First of all, it's all the business deals made after the war between US and the new Iraq government. These deals are made spesifically for US, with no other nation allowed to enter, worth billions of dollars. So, the army is there partly to give protection to American companies conducting construction business in Iraq.
And then there's the geo-strategic reason. Iraq is the perfect place to stage a military base in the middle east. Sure, US already has a stronghold in Saudi Arabia and that Israel is US' closest ally in the region, but if you want to stage an attack or defend your ally (Israel) from opposing nation (mainly Iran or Lebanon) there's no where in the world more perfect than Iraq.
And of course, US want to save face, not wanting Iraq to be known as just another Vietnam.
That's why America still insists in staying.

Its vietnam all over again, the americans with their big guns and bombs swoop in, supposedly saving the day and end up causing more pain and suffering in the process. And now people like my brother who is a medic in RAF has to go out there and pick up all the people injured and killed in this unnecessary war. I don't think they will have died for nothing if they stop now, they died doing something they believed in, and doing a job they chose to do, its just a shame, they shouldn't have been there in the first place. We should have just left them alone in Iraq to kill each other!

Well, I am from Manhattan. But I now live out from American life. I think it's already in our nature to be that way. Nothing could change that fact. Sad but true. That's life I guess. Face it. Human life is basically no different from animal life in African savannas. Predators and preys. Eat or be eaten. Hunt or starve. Run or die. American life is just about that kind of analogy. More less.

A stable Middle East. Is it going to happen? I have no idea. But, without a few representative governments in that part of the world, there isn't a chance of stability.

Bush is in a trap he set up himself.
He just can't get out immediately without creating a much greater tragedy.
The rest of the world has to chip in to help.
Is it his ego that is preventing this to happen?

Its got to be oil, as I fail to see moves on Burma, Darfur etc. I would give it approx 9 months and 'victory' and 'mission accomplished' will be the new sound bites as the US exits Vietnam style.

They are still trying to convince themselves that they have won, or at least the monkey at the White House is, the fools have lost more lives of their own people and thousands more of Iraqis trying to force their ideas on some one who does not want them.
