Spyware is just as dangerous as a virus. Spyware is able to track every webpage you vist, steal your personal data, redirect you to a false webpage that looks real. Bombard you with pop-up, adware, etc. etc.
You don't have to pay for excellent antispyware. Here are three excellent program I use and you download the free versions of them.
Superantispyware, is known to find spyware that is missed by all others. http://www.superantispyware.com
A2Squared Malware out of Austria. This program is excellent and will protect you from rogue dialers, worms, malware, trackware, trace spyware and rogue cookies.
http://www.emsisoft.com
AdAware Se Personal out of Sweden. This antispyware company has been around since computers became commercial. Download their free version.

All of the above are free of adware, spyware and trojans.

Spyware can range from just annoying, to potentially very dangerous, or anything in between. Some spyware just installs annoying pop-ups, others can gather confidential information such as personal data, credit card details, etc. Pretty soon, your data will be traded on underground sites, and the highlight of your next credit card statement will be the brand new Porsche credited to your Gold card. There is no such thing as freeware for spyware (I've downloaded and tried out all the "free software" out there. It will be free for one month, or will identify spyware and inform you that to remove it you will need a licensed version, or some other restriction. My recommendation is to buy the McAfee suite (about $60), which will protect you from Spyware, protect your Registry, protect against virus', etc.

Hi Lori
Spyware is very important - you should try to avoid it and if it does get on your computer then you neeed to remove it so here are some general bits of guidance. If you need to know more, where to find what I recommend, etc. then let me know. What is best is that none of my recommendations will cost you anything.
First you need a good anti virus. AVG free or Avast are good and free. (you only need one of these) You must make sure that the antiv virus is updated regularly and that it does a regular scan of your computer.
Windows XP SP2 comes with a firewall but it is only OK the beauty is that it is easy yo use whereas better ones need you to do a bit of learning - if you want to have a go at this then you could try either zone alarm or comodo. Again you only need one.
You also need spyware checkers/removers. Here I am gonna recommend 3 and I think you should download them all. 1st Windows Defender from Microsoft - this will run in the background and update itself so you can install it and forget it. 2nd Adaware SE - this you will need to install and then run it (say) once a week - always ask it to check for updates before you run a scan and 3rd Spybot Search and Destroy. This is same advice as adaware - run around once per week and make sure you update each time
Hope that helps if there is anything else let me know :-)
