It depends on the motherboard that it's in. You see, you have to compare the WHOLE package, then decide. Here are the considerations:
- value
- speed
- memory speed
- operating system
You seem your system could be a fraction slower than a system that costs 4 times more... so do your homework. For a desktop, compare HP, DELL and Gateway. For a laptop, look at Toshiba and HP. If you are going to BUILD your own, then look at http://www.newegg.com
But if you want TOTALLY AWESOME, then look at AlienWare (but high price)
Good luck and Happy Computing!

Well so far a ton of stuff said that is not true, let me try to help you out. These two are remarkable close in performance, so really it comes down to whichever one is cheaper. The E4300 is probably just slightly better, but nothing really noticeable. If you do want to overclock, easily go with the E4300.
Now just to clear up a few things that people messed up on. The deal with motherboards is if you get a cheap one, it is cheap quality, whether it is AMD or Intel. Good Intel boards are no more expensive than good AMD boards. Secondly, the whole Intel for multimedia and AMD for games. This is probably one of the most well circulated myths in the area of processors. This was somewhat true back in the Pentium vs Athlon days, but the Core 2 Duo is great in games in fact that is the one area where it has the biggest advantage over the Athlons.

The question is not which is better but which is useful for you?
If you are focused or interested in multi-media and media develpoment then the Intel Core 2 Duo e4300 is your processor. This processor focuses more on the multi-media functions. This is great for Video makers and people who makes multi-media for a living.
Now the AMD athalon 64 X2 Dual Core 4400+ is for gamers. If you want the best graphics and the best performance in your game then i suggest you to use this.
I know this because two of my friends have this processors. One had the Intel and the other AMD. We tested both processors in both categories.
AMD = Games, Game development
Intel = Multimedia, Media developmnet
But if you are going to use it just for internets and random stuff that won't demand any performances then i suggest you a cheaper processor. I hope this helped. Peace

If you are a casual user, you might not notice the performance difference; even in games, where performance is much more dependent on the capability of the graphics card. X2 4400+ looks attractive in terms of many cheap but good AM2 motherboards available. Cheap LGA775 mobos are based on old technology.
If you are an overclocker, then there is only one choice, the E4300. But you may have to spend a good deal more for a 965 based mobo with full tweaking options.

The E4300 gets a normal clock rate at 1.8 GHz, and 2MB cache as the AMD anthlon 64.... has 2.2 GHz but a 1MB cache. I'm no expert, but the AMD is better because its faster processor will give you longer use of your computer ( I'm answering I'm assuming that is no price preference)
