There is no BEST. You see, if there was a BEST, then hackers would GO AFTER that, and it wouldn't be the BEST any more. You see, a diversity makes us all safe.

I recommend that you go with a plain anti-virus solution, instead of an all in one suite; which would make your computer DOG SLOW. I would avoid the AOL thing.

If you have Windows XP with SP2, then use the Windows Firewall. Use Windows Defender too. But I also recommend Ad-aware and SpyBot Search & Destroy to help you clean up adware and spyware threats.

You see, your BEST defense if your BRAIN. Do some computer maintenance, so your computer runs fast. It is more vulnerable when it is running slow.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

I use an antivirus program used by the Govt of China. If I had to pick between Avg, Avast and AOL K., being that I test all antivirus/antispyware programs to see if they perform as claimed I would use the AOL Active Virus Shield. Tested it and found that is caught more viruses then AVG or Avast.

Here is the AOL link.

You get automatic updates every hour on the hour. Powered by Karpersky engine Russia. Rated #1 in the world for virus detection. Plus you also get a free background scanner that really works well.

Minddoctor, France

Plus Kaspersy, also has a stand alone antivirus software that will run direct from their server.

I see the AVG fanboys and cheerleaders are out in full force again here on Yahoo Answers!

Mostly noobs, the naive and the computer illiterate use AVG Free. These types love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!

In short, AVG Free is crap!

In test,
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82
after test,
http://www.av-comparatives.org/
after test,
http://antivirus.about.com/od/antivirussoftwarereviews/gr/avgfree.htm
after test ,

after test,
http://techsupportalert.com/issues/al_current.htm#Section_0
etc. etc. etc, ad nauseam, AVG free fares poorly.

AVG has proven itself to be a miserable performer at best. Missing almost 20%, while trying to detect known malware, in some tests. Not to mention almost non-existent heuristic detection and infrequent "once-a day" updates.

AVG. = Average, at best!

There are much better free alternatives such as Avria Anti-Vir:

and Active Virus Shield:

It's either Avast or AVG. I prefer Avast because it has a nicer interface. but in terms of security they are both top-rated.
