1. List some examples of water damage and how humans try to prevent damage.
Information: floods, avalanches and tsunami. And I also know how human try to prevent these damages.
I need more examples. Can you give me some more and also tell me how humans to prevent those?

2. Do any of the ways in which humans try to prevent damage caused by water create other problems? Select few examples and discuss.
Information: Humans try to prevent floods by building levees and dikes. I just know two.But I don't know how levees and dikes create problems. But I can tell you how peole build them. Here:
Levees, long walls of earth, are built along the banks parallel to a river. They are designed to keep the river contained during flooding.
Dikes protect land that has been reclaimed from the ocean. Poeple also bulid dikes around their houses and towns when a flood threatens.
Thats all I know. Except this, I need more examples and how they create problems.
Please help me!!!

erosion, seepage, and water logging. seepage is prevented by lining the walls with plastic or coating with a sealant , water logging is reduced by boring holes into the earth and pumping out water into water channels that carry water to where it might be needed, erosion on large scale is difficult to prevent but in man made structures it is reduced by protecting chemical coatings. The scaling caused by water in boilers and pipes that can cause huge losses is prevented by treating water with chemicals to reduce the hardness of the water
When you dam the natural flow of the water you are depriving the habitat of water where it was flowing naturally downstream causing immense damage to flora and fauna of that region. Secondly the area where the water is dammed is also damaged as all the natural life of that area is destroyed. The area where the water is stored becomes water logged and start causing damage to the surrounding area by seepage and changing the pH of the surrounding soil. All the natural flora and fauna of this area would be hurt also. So it could lead to a total disaster.

1. How about earthquakes? I don't think you can predict or prevent an earthquake but there have been instances in which water was hampered by a quake. I would also include storms. Really bad storms have created water problems.

What about sending out warnings through the media...like the radio, television. Listening to the news cast to give you warnings about the weather. Sometimes they send trained spotters on the ground to determine if a tornado is about to hit a certain location. Using sirens to warn people of an upcoming natural disaster is a way to prevent damage to the watersystem. Word of mouth or people gossiping of an upcoming storm. The gov.t can prepare accordingly.

2.I think the situation in New Orleans --Hurrican Katrina--is a perfect example. The levees weren't built and were not maintained regularly to prevent the hurricane from taking over. The Lousiana gov.t had known that those levees were not built right but they didn't do anything to keep up the maintenance and to reinforce the levees. Just look at the whole Hurrican Katrina situation. Insurance companies ripping people off...People left to live in mobile homes and having to depend upon the government for financial assistance. The government is going to kick these people off off financial assistance and they are going to end up homeless. I'd say yes they cause problems.

I would say just look at the whole entire Hurrican Katrina situation and you will know.
