Yes. But with modern fuel injected engines, the temperature set by the themostat is important to correct ECM computer control of the air/fuel mixture, so you should not drive it that way for more than necessary. You can remove the thermostat on the highway if it is stuck closed and be able to drive the car to the repair shop or auto parts store to get a new thermostat. You could also remove the thermostat to do a thorough engine coolant flush.

Thermostat helps to heat up the engine quickly when it's cold by blocking the water flow. Specially during winter.
That's all it does.
So till you get a new thermostat, you can drive safely.
No probs.
Make sure you run on idle for a while before you start driving if it's a very cold place you live in.
But remember that you'll get overheated if you are driving with a malfunctioning thermostat. In this case just remove it.
Cheers

yes, it wont hurt it. the most that can happen is that it might overheat. that's not always the case. just stop and let it cool down..if your planing a long trip you might want to put one back in it. a thermostat controls the temperature of the water/anti-freeze in the motor. if you use the car for short drives then you'll be fine. but i would suggest replacing it if you live in a place that gets hot. or in winter when you want heat. with out a thermostat you have no heat or very little.

Yes, you can. However, without the thermostat, the engine will likely not reach the proper operating temp and if it is a computer controlled car will cause it to run rich (using too much fuel) and may cause the check engine light to come on.

yes you can. It won't overheat because of no thermostat. It won't warm up properly, though. It actually can cause some driveability issues, without being properly warmed up, the computer will command the fuel system to add fuel. This can cause a very rich condition. I would just fix it properly.

i have been but i live in florida where it always hot the reason for a thermostat is to let the motor get hot enough to thin out the oil so it flows free through the motor freely

The Mountaineer will run tough and not using a thermostat. the laptop use sensors to compute the gas/air ratio and stuff. If the motor is working on the incorrect temperature the laptop will do incorrect issues.

Not a good idea, in cold weather it will never warm up properly and you'll burn a lot more fuel plus get poor heat from vents. In summer the opposite can happen, it can over heat because the coolant doesn't stay in the rad long enough to cool down.

you'll be driving without coolant
the thermostat controls the coolant flow
oil + coolant = the blood in your body
