How does a person learn how to swim?

the best way to learn how to swim is probably to take lessons...but if you want to learn by yourself you should get some type of floating buoy or belt (you could find this probably at a sports store in a pool section) and try dog paddling or the front crawl with that on....once you feel comfortable enough try to swim without your floating device in shallow water...make sure to keep your arms and legs moving or you will sink....if you feel comfortable swimming you can move to deeper water and learn different strokes.

**you should have some one with you when you are learning for safety reasons**

good luck!!!

ask someone at the local pool where you can sign up for lessons. or have a friend of yours that knows how to swim teach you, or your parents or siblings or relatives etc.
good luck!

Join a team, or take lesons from a qualified instructor. You will learn more in a week with an instructor, than trying for a year by yourself.
