and i want to be apart of it. I love the songs that Tuptim sings, but i'm afraid of how much "romance" there actually is. i haven't seen the play and they don't really have any character sketches on the web (from what i found.) for anna, the audition is "whistle a happy tune" and sadly to say, i can't whistle. :D i'm not entirely ecstatic about lady thiang, but i don't know. what do you guys think?

Tuptim and LunTha do kiss in most productions, but that's about it. They just look at each other very lovingly. A lot. It never goes any further than that.
For Anna, if you can't whistle, ask a friend to stand off stage and whistle for you :-) If you're a strong enough singer and they want you for the part they can have a 'whistle double' do it for you :-) We did it for the Louis in one of our productions!
Lady Thiang's song is very challenging... and not very easy to make it look well done even if you did a great job.

There is hardly any romance at all. Tuptim and Lun Tha are the ones that fall in love. I don't even recall them even kissing! If they do, it's only once. Lady Thiang has a really good song. And it's fun to be one of the wives. Especially when they are wearing the hoop skirts and they all hit the floor when the King comes in. Their skirts fly up in the air. So funny!!!!!!

Maybe you should watch the movie. If you do try out and get a part, you could talk to the director about the romance thing. He may be able to change something around for you if you're feeling uncomfortable.
