"Tom,Dick and Harry shared a bag of marbles.Tom received 2/5of the marbles.Dick received 2/3 as many marbles as Tom.Harry recevied 65 marbles. How many more marbles did Tom get then Dick?"

If Dick received 2/3 of what Tom received then he received 2/3 * 2/5 of the marbles. (Remember: "Of" usually means multiplication in math class.) 2/3 times 2/5 is 4/15.

So Dick received 4/15 and Tom got 2/5 or 6/15. That leaves 5/15 for Harry. Thus 5/15 of the marbles is 65 marbles.

If 5 fifteenths of the marbles is 65 then 65/5 = 1/15 of the marbles. 1/15 of the marbles must be 13 marbles.

So, if Dick got 4/15 then he had 13 x 4 or 52 marbles. If Tom had 6/15 then he had 13 x 6 or 78 marbles. Therefore, Tom got 26 more marbles than Dick.

Tom received 2/5 so there are only 3/5 left.
Dick received 2/3 as many marbles as Tom.
2/3 * 2/5 = 4/15
(nemerator*numerator , denominator* denominator)
so, if we take one whole and minus Tom & Dick's portion, you will get
1 - 2/5 - 4/15
=15/15 - 6/15 - 4/15 [ change all to same denominator]
=(15-6-4)/15
=5/15

so (5/15)of total marbles is 65, (1/15) of the total marbles will be 65/5=13

Tom had 6/15 of the total marbles while Dick had 4/15. 6/15-4/15=2/15

1/15 * 2=2/15
13*2=26 [the answer]

all marbles = x

Tom has 2x/5, Dick has (2x/5) * (2/3) = 4x / 15, and remaining is Harry's which is:
x - (2x/5 + 4x/15) = x - (10x / 15) = x - (2x / 3) = x/3

if x/3= 65, x= 195

Tom has 78, Dick has 52 marbles

2/5 X +2/3*2/5X +65=X;
2/5x+4/15X+65-X=0
-1/3X=-65
x=65*3=195
tom=2/5*195=78
harry=65
dick=52
78-52=26

in case you think of of two^x as a sparkling variable, y say, then you somewhat can write the equation as a quadratic in y: y^2/8-3y+sixteen=0 which would be factored to (multiplying by skill of 8) (y-8)(y-sixteen)=0 so the recommendations for y are 8 and sixteen. Now for 2^x equivalent to those 2 numbers you get x=3 or x=4.

2/5 x+2/3 * 2/5 x +65=x
2/5 x-4/15x=?
x=195

78-52= 26
