A diary or journal is a place to write inner-most thoughts, secrets, and opinions. That is why I do not keep one. If they are "innermost" then why would I write them down where someone else could read them?
My late grandmother kept one for about 40 years. You could look up particular dates of events that you knew happened and find her snotty and arrogant opinions of the event and the people there. I didn't read a lot of the diaries, just enough to let me know that there were many times she felt very unkindly towards those I loved. They are being held like historical documents by an eccentric uncle of mine now. When he dies, they will be burned in a barrel before anyone, including myself, can be hurt by the invalid opinions held therein.
So.....if I had one, what would I write? Happy lies. Only sweet, happy-crappy thoughts of everyone so no one would ever be hurt by it. Now...what's the point of that? Nothing. Live your life and then let it go. No historical record needed or necessary.

Long ago, I saw Oprah Winfrey talking about keeping a "Gratitude Journal". She said it helped her realize what good things she had in her life compared to the bad, I thought that was a cool idea, so I started doing that. Through the years it has become a sporadic unveiling of every type of emotion I have. I reveal things I feel, things I want, people I want, people I've had, things I've done, things I want to do. Sometimes I write pages and pages, and sometimes it's a paragraph. I rarely go back and read what I've written, but if anybody else did, they would be very surprised, and possibly shocked...lol

I have a hand-written record of things since 2005, when I gave away my journal. Nowadays, I record medication times and reminders for the next day. Sometimes I write down information I've just found out.
If you're going to write in a diary, keep what you want to be written for yourself, and keep it legibly.

not a diary or journal, really- more of a bedside inspiration pad. Sometimes I'll have a dream, thought or memory that I don't wanna let go of but I know if I don't write it down, I'll lose it. Random thoughts and ideas, sometimes I have trouble making out my writing cause I'm half asleep.Works for me!

Back when I was wandering the Earth like Caine, I kept a journal. Mostly I recorded interesting cultural tidbits or stories about the people I met. I haven't written my thoughts and experiences down for some years, though I still record mundane facts when I travel.

I have a journal, and I write my innermost thoughts, my views on the world, what I think of people, my deepest secrets, etc. It's a thing I can tell things too that won't judge me for being me.

I have a visual diary so I do lots of drawings its another way to express myself. I do write some things of interest to me, info, ancedotes, what's on my mind, things I have to do, how I feel about people, movies, films, books critiques etc. Quotes my son has given me, things I have seen, heard. Amusing, hilirious, satirical, outrageous it all goes in my diary. Mainly its used to express myself how I feel in words or pictures.

Since there is more I'd rather forget than remember it would most likely be reduced to something as meaningless, perhaps, as in, the number of morning sinkers versus floaters.

A list of complaints?
No, seriously, I write mostly about myself and people (it's amazing to watch people and yourself change), some dumb thoughts, a few crackpot ideas and some really weird experiences.
