there is a problem with your soil ; pending what sort of plants ; you have --- but i'd not mind betting that it ( the soil in your garden ) is too acidic and needs to be rectified --- but not knowing much other than what you have said --- that is definately the problem ( the garden soil ) --- and simply your plants are doing well in potting mix --- because they ' like it there ' --- anyhow my suggestion is to get a sample of your soil and take it to the nursery for analaysis --- or get a soil test kit and do it yourself ( if you have 500 plants --- you must have some idea of what you are doing ) good luck .

When they were in the ground, did you...

Periodically change their soil to newer enriched stuff.
Feed them fertilizer.
Water them as they needed, and gave their roots a really good soaking.
Pruned dead leaves and insect off any time they appeared.
Talked to them, telling them how beautiful they are.

Because when you care for your potted plants, you most likely do almost all of those things.

Are you still wondering why the plants do "better" in pots than in the ground?

Agree with Bill. It's all about the difference in quality of the soils.

Give the plants in the ground weekly or biweekly feeding of MiracleGro.

500, impressive!
