I am interseted in starting a course to work in a mortuary. I am after anyone who already does so, and where they went for work experience. I've heard a lot about having to do a year's fulltime voluntary work (that is if you're lucky to be accepted) before you are taken on as a paid trainee I am considering writing to the local hosp. mortuary's and asking to be put on their files for part-time voluntary work. But i'm interested in chatting to anyone else in that field or considering it. THanks

Strange at it may seem; You need great people skills. Most of your work will be in dealing with those the dearly departed left behind.

Any work that makes you great at handling people will get you a trainee position. You can get people experience anywhere but i would suggest hospitals and old folks homes.

You can of course ask at any mortuary but usually they don't deal with beginners as they can not afford any slip up. You need to be pretty well rounded before getting into this business.

I think that you are doing all you can, most funeral services operate a system that invoves mortuary services, i know because when i was younger i tried to get a job as a mortuary assistant, but they are mainly family operated. so i didnt get the job i wanted. i think hospitals, and forensic scientists are the way for you to go. anyone interested can join those. i wish you luck on your future profession xx

I am not sure how you go about it, but I was interested in the replies you have had. Why is it everybody seems to think that working with the dead is so morbid, someone has to do it and I think you should be proud that you are interested enough to enquire about it. I hope you get a good job, and enjoy it.
