Ethical hackers aren't real hackers. They're just computer security experts who prefer to think they're hackers.
Hacking is breaking into computers while breaking the law. Thus, securing operating systems/software to prevent hackers from breaking in is not hacking. Hacking is very unethical, to suggest it is otherwise is to be completely deluded.
Not everyone can be a hacker. Some people just aren't smart enough. It's a fact of life.
To become a super hacker usually takes an average hacker an extra 6 months on top of their previous hacker training. Usually this process is sped up by performing occult rituals involving computers, unless the hacker is also a ninja in which case the ninja will fight no less than 3480 pirates before advancing to the next level. This is why there are so few pirates on the seas today. The exact number of superhackers are unknown as superhackers automatically gain the skill of 'Invisibility', which makes them hard to count.
Seriously though, college has nothing to do with becoming a hacker. By the time most hackers finish high school, they have already learnt so much about computers that to study them formally would be a total and complete waste of time. What a college student learns in 3 years, a hacker learns in about 3 weeks. This is why hackers usually study non-computer-related subjects or skip university altogether.
Hackers have an instinct with computers that other people just don't have. It's very hard to explain in words. Basically you're either a hacker or you're not. There's no middle ground save the egocentric claims of the so-called 'ethical hackers'.
This is often why "teach me to hack" requests are rebuffed by hackers because most of them just don't understand what part of hacking requires teaching. 90% of hackers are self-taught. The other 10% were introduced to hacking by someone else but eventually taught themselves in the end.
And to answer your question about young children hacking: I've seen a 5yr old successfully hack computers.
It all comes down to brains, really. If hacking doesn't already come to you as common sense, you probably won't ever 'get it'.

ok first there are different types that people put as hackers
most put them in these clases
1. White Hats (Helpers) paid to hack to find vulnerability in systems or they just do it for free for the fun/thrill (causing no damage and telling people how to fix the security breach)
2. Black Hat/Cracker (not helpers) hack into computers for profit or just for fun/thrill(cause harm steal informations ect..)
there are other terms that people say are hackers too like script kiddies ect...
to find some more info go here

Why would you not?
Do you mean to use the term cracker:
http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/crackers.html
A hacker, by and large, has ethics:
http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/H/hacker-ethic.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker_ethic
Here's a how-to:
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/hacker-howto.html
I did take a couple college classes, but most of what I know I have learned on my own
The Jargon File is pretty much the standard for info on hackers:

Yes of course it help, why if you ask me if for example buffer flow errors(for binaries),reverse eng this requires you to have specific knowledge of assembly( for ex X86). You will also need to know databases, scripting launguages if you need to hack webservers. If you are really into computers then you would naturally be intersted in computer organization compiler design, etc .If you study some more subjects you got yourself a degree my friend.
I hope you got what i mean
