I like the Senate. I see it as an extra roadblock to prevent Congress from passing bad legislation. Gridlock is an important part of the Constitution that I don't think most people consider. We mostly assume government ought to operate swiftly and efficiently, but the Founders deliberately made passing legislation and amending the Consitution difficult to prevent sweeping changes. It's not that the veto and the Senate are fool proof, but any extra obstacle in place makes the process all that much harder. I wouldn't mind abolishing the electoral college, though. Actually, I don't care either way.

I don't know from what "Magic 8-Ball" Fraginal is getting his information, but it's ridiculously inaccurate. PLEASE IGNORE HIS ANSWER.

Why abolish the Senate? There is a need for a second opinion in all government. It creates a bulwark against too swiftly giving into popular passions. The Senate's job is to say, "Hold on; let's not move too fast." You may not like it; but the fact is, without the Senate, there would be any number of additional amendments to the Constitution like admitting Prayer into public schools, anti-flag burning and a number of other issues. ALL of these and more sailed through the House, and were only killed because of the Senate. Don't be so quick to dismiss its impotance. The House is far too swayed by the sentiment "du jour" of the people. The Senate imposes a greater sense of sanity on legislative actions.

As for the Electoral College. I don't favor repeal of it (for reasons too complicated to explain here). I favor reform of it in two ways: change the votes to points automatically awarded to the plurality victor of each state; and, award an extra 100 electoral points to the plurality winner of the national popular vote. This solves the major problems with the college.

Cheers.

No, to either one. Most certainly the electorial college is the best thing that ever happened in our system.

It is quite simple to see, that without it the president could be elected by only 10 or 20 big cities votes. So the big cities would control the election process.

No you're point of view would not be good!! There is a reason for the house and senate... and good ones. The house is a voice more directly related to the opinions of the people and the senate is more "government" oriented. Sounds good to me and history will agree as well.

no. the u.s. was founded on each state having it's own governing body. the three sections of the government, i.e. judicial, executive, and legislative are the foundation of this country and what the founding fathers intended! to want something else is perfectly ok, just realize that it isn't american.

No. That seems rash and not very well thought out. I don't want someone from another state representing me.

An initiative by the people evidenced by the signatures of the people required under the Constitution could request for the abolition of the Senate and the electoral college to give way for a unicameral Congress and direct vote by the people to determine the President as chosen by the majority.
