I often see Americans playing English characters and they generally do it convincingly, but I can't think of a single instance when it's the other way around.
I can think of lots of Australians who can do it, but what about Brits?
Oh, I just thought of one. Ewen McGregor in Velvet Goldmine.

YES !!! 2 of the best actors out there are English.
Gary Oldman & the great Anthony Hopkins who many consider one of the finest actors of all time. Did you ever see "Silence of the Lambs". Anthony Hopkins gave us one of the best and most terrifying performances by any actor.

Kate Winslet is British, and she has done a few movies as an American. Sounds good to me.
Hugh Laurie in House is excellent.
Catherine Zeta Jones is good at American accents.
Orlando Bloom
Can't think of any more, other than Australians like Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths.

There are my Brits that play American roles. So many in fact, you'd probably be surprised to find out so many of them are British.

Helena Bonham Carter gave one of the most convincing portrayals of an American Girl in the movie "Fight Club" I have ever seen. She had the accent and the attitude spot on!!

That guy that plays Dr. House, I'm pretty sure he's Britsh. Hugh Laurie is the actors name. I think he does a pretty good job of it.
