Chavez takes care of poor people and is branded antiamerican. Can someone logically say how this is so. When we give foreign aid are we anti all the countries we help?? And doesnt the American government attempt to control foreign governments with the aid stipulations and the list of who is bad and good at the State department? Does it gall a necon that a socialist elected by the majority of his people doing what his people want is better to americans. He treats Americans better than the capitalists that the neocons love so much?

So your saying we should judge Chavez solely on you saying he helps the poor heat their homes. So that gives us the big picture on Chavez does it?

You know mafioso's in Italy/Sicily donated to the church and the poor as well.
Drug Cartel kingpins in places like Columbia give to the poor also.

I guess thats the bottom line then is it?

Chavez is doing exactly what every socialist dictator does to gain and cement power. He starts out with some very important and deliberate shows of solidarity with the "People" then he eliminates elections, turns the system into a personal system that feeds only who he wants it to feed.
He is following the old Soviet play book to the letter and it's working.... for now. Give it about 5 years and he will either be hanging from a rope or the absolute ruler.
Socialism cannot function without the people being subjects to the state.

I read in the news two days ago that Chavez is taking over the banks. Chavez's best buddy is Fidel Castro. Chavez keeps control by taking care of poor people but he also keeps them poor. If you are poor and are dependent upon Chavez for survival, of course Chavez is going to be presidente for life. What is Chavez doing to raise the economic status of his people other than heating their homes. Since he is gauging Americans at the pump (citgo) he can afford to be generous to his own people.

Because cons think Bush is America. It's that simple. Criticizing Bush is enough to get labeled a traitor and anti-American by cons.

CHAVEZ DOES NOT CALL HIMSELF ANTI-AMERICAN. HE CALLS THE AMERICAN PEOPLE OUR FRIENDS.

Chavez boosts heating oil program for U.S. poor; takes another swipe at Bush

NEW YORK (AP) — Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez visited a Harlem church Thursday and promised to double the amount of discounted heating oil his country ships to needy Americans. But he also took another swipe at President Bush.

A day after he called Bush "the devil" in a speech to the U.N. General Assembly, Chavez said of the president: "He's an alcoholic and a sick man."

He called Bush's policies in Iraq criminal, adding he hopes Americans will before long "awaken" and elect a better president. While he opposes Bush, Chavez said the American people "are our friends."

Chavez also announced that Citgo, the U.S.-based refining arm of Venezuela's state-run oil company, plans to more than double the amount of heating oil it is making available under the program to 100 million gallons this winter, up from 40 million gallons.

He said the oil will reach people in 17 states, including Indians in Alaska, some of whom were flown to New York for the ceremony and attended in traditional dress. They performed a traditional dance for Chavez and offered him a walrus figurine carved out of whale bone as a gift.

People need to be human beings first then parents then sons, daughters, friends...before the issue of what country you live in comes up....Is being American more important than taking care of family, friends, and the needy? I don't want "American" on my tombstone...I would rather have father ot friend

Need you be reminded that Al Capone gave to the poor as well !!

And what's with the infatuation to legitimize Chavez ? About 1% of the U.S. population agrees with you .

If you think it's a problem for them (neo-cons) to help other countries... think of how much of a bigger issue it is for them to help poor American people heat their homes. As it happens to be these days.

chavez is a tyrant. he has a lot of personal wealth, though he presents himself as a commie. think along these lines of logic " you may go to the doctor, but they will have no medicine for you." "you may have a job, but you may not ever advance".
he jails people who speak out against him.
he is no Che.
he is greedy.
helping people heat their homes is not anti american, but pointing missles at us is.
funding and consorting with our enemys (think hugo chavez) is anti american.
we are capitalists, we believe people should be free to help themselves, so yes we overlook providing health care, heat, and in many cases food to the poor. it sucks, but we still live in the best country in the world, it allows us more freedoms than most of the world will ever know.

Uhhh???
Chavez calls himself anti-American. I'd say that's a pretty good explanation (though it does require some serious thinking, which might be tough for some of you)
