As long as your ammonia and nitrite are present you'll only stress your fish. This is true for any level over 0.5ppm. And adding a fish will only create that much more ammonia.

A tank will take up to two months to fully cycle. See the chart on this website: http://www.firsttankguide.net/cycle.php . The time at the bottom is in days. Compare the readings with what your tank has been doing.

I know it's not much fun looking at an empty tank, but it's not much fun buying fish and having them die, either. Just be patient - the gouramis will still be for sale in a few weeks from now and your tank will be in better condition to keep one.

If you want to speed up the process a little, raise the temperature in the tank to around 80-85o. The increased temperature will let the bacteria be more active and they'll multiply a little faster. You could also try making your own chart like the one on the webpage. If you're testing the water anyway, this will give you an idea of what your water chemistry is doing, and you'll be able to predict a little better when that nitrate level is finally going to be more than the nitrite level. From there it won't be long until the ammonia and nitrite are both zero and you can start adding a few fish. Don't try and rush that either - just because the tank's cycled doesn't mean you can put 10 fish in the next day! Do 2-3 at a time to start. Just use the extra time to plan which fish you want to get.

your tank is tightly stocked through the undeniable fact that is, the kuhli loaches are positive, I dont recognize why persons are suggesting that they favor 30 gallons. per chance because they advance to 4 inches? yet I dont imagine they comprehend that those fish will not in any respect evan be as huge as a pencil. i personally imagine you should get one extra, so as that they might no longer be as shy. The harleys are ok, yet it really is gonna max out your tank. and also you may favor to have a good good clear out and keep up with 20-25 % weekly water differences. you could get a betta fish fairly of the harleys, or fairly of the kuhlis, yet a dwarf gourami truly must have 20 gallons minimum. they don't seem as hardy as betas, and favor a lot extra good water circumstances.

you need to get your ammonia and nitrite levels down to zero before you add any fish! even a tiny little bit of ammonia can kill fish, i found this out the hard way. Unless you want to have to buy replacement fish don't even think about adding them yet, wait until you get your levels under control. Good luck!

dont forget to check your ph levels too. Yes, that will be fine to add your gourami.

Well done for wanting the best for you fish!
