yes there is a difference where your regular oil filters are just paper and synthetic filters have fibers that interlocks to one another and filters to lower microns that a paper filter could even think of.

I don't see how there could be, really. Traditional oil filtration is a 'straining' process - and the strain can't be too small or the oil won't flow properly. There is a difference in filtration when magnetics are introduced - such as at the link below.
