I tried to take my PC back to factory settings but the screen went blank and a message appeared which said. The corruption on your windows partition is too extensive to perform the restore option selected. If I buy a new hard drive will it sort out the problem?

Did you try to do a full format and restore with whatever tools they gave you? If that won't work... You'll need a fresh installation of Windows. Do they still include restore disks with computers or do you have to rely on what they put on your hard drive? If so... that sucks... You pay for Windows in a format that's bound to be corrupted sooner or later...

If the restore information was on the hard drive... a new one won't have it... Formatting the old one and starting from scratch would be the same thing as buying a new one... if there's nothing physically wrong with the old one...

It's possible these problems were caused by a hardware failure and something needs replacing. A full restore or fresh installation of Windows would be the first thing to try though...

The file system can be corrupted by viruses... bad software... etc... It's possible that Windows can no longer be restored with older files after certain updates... Hardware failures can also cause corruption of files. Bad hard drive, bad memory, bad CPU... Could be just about anything...

A program called TUFFtest can be downloaded on the internet for about $10.00 and be used to make a boot floppy or CD that tests memory, CPU, hard drive and some components of the mainboard if your computer continues to act funny after fixing any possible software problems. Can help pinpoint problem hardware. You can find freeware tests on the web for hard drives, memory, etc... Not all in one convenient program. Search Yahoo...

Sorry I can't be more specific. Been building my own systems so long... Not sure how system recovery works with store-bought computers these days. I just use my trusty Windows full install disk. After all my software's installed and the system's running great... I use Windows Backup to make a full system backup and save it to another hard drive.

Try repairing your boot.ini file. This is sometimes a symptom of boot.ini being corrupted.

Use the link below.
Testdisk
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
TestDisk is a powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting your Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.

slip in your windows CD boot the system and when it asks if you want to install or repair try the repair option if that don't work, try a normal format first that may do the job, if that don't work

go to the hard drive manufactures web site and download the utilities software to check out the drive, it will find the faults and should repair them,
you can do alot with the utilities disk. you may need to low level format the hard drive,

if not then you will need to buy a hard drive....
