No. USA influence, economically and militarily has waned in the past 30 years, relegating the USA to a country "fighting for survival".
Our dominance, along with Russia, over Germany and Japan in the 1940's signaled the downfall of the USA. We became overly confident, believing we were superior to all others. We became involved in a conflict in North Korea, which we did not "win". We sent troops into Viet Nam, with the loss of many lives, and won nothing. In each of those confrontations, the U.S. was not fighting for their existence; but, because of our feeling of "superiorty", we thought we would prevail. We didn't.
Now, we have become engaged in "tribal" wars among Afghanistanis, Pakistanis, Iraqis, Iranians, and Israelites. We have evidence that "tribal" conflicts have existed between and among these people for thousands of years, yet we (the US) believe "we" can bring these people to a truce, a peace.
The audacity of the USA that our government can solve these people's issues with each other in 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, or even 100 years is beyond understanding.
Within the next 10 years, the USA will no longer be a world power. Through the courts, Muslims, Afghans, and Hispanics will be in control, setting the standards for education, econmics, and government. The USA, and its citizens, will be pledging allegiance to Hugo Chavez or Osama Bin Laden.

I think that we have two choices -- 1) Continue to be a world superpower or 2) Have an all volunteer military; we cannot have both. The decisions made along these lines will determine where the US will stand in years to come.

No, the government is obviously not working for the people anymore.
The dollar has fallen.
The middle-class is dissappearing within the next 5 yrs according to business analysts.
And the people will obviously revolt, thereby leaving us open to foreign attack. Hey, even Rome fell.

There is an old saying...fathers of great things sprout children who only understand enough to maintain it. The next generation bask in the spoils and lose everything.
That was a poor interpretation, but I hope you get the point. I think the Chinese know what time it is and they are ready for the reigns as soon as we drop them.

Sure, we have the resources and the capital infrastructure. The only thing that can really derail us is continued governmental encroachment in the free market.
