The screen is blank. When the power cord is taken out the IDE light goes out. The IDE is the only light on. I hold the power button but the power won't turn on. The IDE light is the icon for the DVD drive but there is no CD in the drive. The screen is blank and there is no sound at all. I put a CD in but nothing happens. The computer is a laptop HP Pavilion dv5000 notebook.

When I open the computer the screen is black because it is not able to turn on. The only light on is the IDE drive light which is the icon for the DVD drive. IDE icon looks like CDs stacked onto each other. There is no sound because I can't get the computer to turn on even though I hold down the power button. The IDE light goes out when I take the power cord out and turns on when I put it back in. I checked the battery and it is fine. The computer is a HP Pavilion dv5000.

Get your laptop checked by a professional.
Apparently the power supply to the mother board is disrupted and there is no power to the board.

it SOUNDS like it could be a case of a failing motherboard.
When you startup the computer does it beep at all during what would normally be an initialization process. If not, it could be a motherboard issue which...well if the computer is more than a year old you may have to part ways with the machine.
If it does beep, and the problem is otherwise just no picture it COULD be an issue with the screen of the laptop reaching the motherboard, or it could be screen failure. The former may be much cheaper than if the screen needs to be replaced...

when u mean the screen is blank you mean your screen with no icons or black like MS-DOS mode if you see your destop image but notthing else its a virus you can fixed it by running the program eplorer.exe again in task manager which comes up CTRL+ALT+DELETE then go to file new task type:explorer.exe
But if its black no picture then u have a big issue call technical support for hp united States
