I believe my odometer is correct. BUT a mechanic at my dealership told me that if I reset the odometer back to 0 (zero) while the engine is running either idle or in motion I will not get the correct mileage. What do you think? Could that be true?

Your mechanic is an idiot that should not be working on your car oh make sure you call him an idiot thanks my best wishes.
The best way to save gas is to not excellrate too fast everytime you slow down or stop and
buy a k&N air filter as it will save gas and pay for its self over time fast! saves 1-3 mpg and more horsepower win win item

Well that just sounds silly. Ask this mechanic why. Why in gods name would it be or could it give you the wrong mileage?

Unless he's talking about doing it twice. If you try to do the exact same trip twice, it wont be the same both times because of what I call the bend factor.

If you travel in the right lane around a left bend you travel farther than if you were in the left lane around a left bend. And same for the right bend and left lane.

Other than that it should be very accurate.

What difference would it make if the engine is running??? The trip odometer doesn't care about that.

Even if you are running down the road, once you reset it, it will start getting counts from wherever it gets them from, so it still takes the same amount of counts to make it turn a tenth of a mile, so agan, what difference does it make?
