I was thinking of playing the drums keep me busy. Will I have to learn to read music to play? I have a pretty good rhythm, I just can't read music. I have a drum set to use that my dad owns, I mess around with it sometimes, but I don't know if I need sheets to play songs.

My dad actually doesn't play drums, he's in a band and he has the most storage for everything. He plays bass. He's been playing for almost 30 years.

I've been playing for over a decade now and I've never read a sheet of music. Practice practice practice. As long as you feel the music and you have a passion for rhythm, you'll go as far as you desire.

I've been in many bands over the years and in that time I have come across two drummers that couldn't read music. One had the worst style and would always throw everyone off and the other was really incredible. I guess it comes down to how much you love music and how much you enjoy playing drums. I'm a lead singer and I can't read music, but I live to sing and I soak in every lyric and that makes me a better performer and easy to work with. I feel it's a personal thing and if you think you can play drums without learning to read music... you go for it!!! Best of luck, friend =)

If you want to play it exactly the same way every time, yes you need to read music. While we're on the subject, do you know if Ringo Starr was a great drummer?

Yes, but if you go for drum lessons, they will teach you to read music. Reading music helps you know how fast or slow to tap your drums.
