Hi i just want to say i know alot about ever kind of natural disasters and your question is good, but to get a answer we would have to first find out what cause a tsunami,i can say that yes a tsunami can hit new york city, but let say a asteroid 1 mile wide hit the atlanta ocean at 35.000mph it would cause a mega tsunami over 3.000 feet high and the mega tsunami well be moving at over 1,000 mph(the speed of sound is 761mph)went this wave hit,it will leave nothing standed i mean nothing,it would be like the city was never there all that there would be is a muded platfarm,if 2 feet of water can move a car, then think of what a 3.000+foot wave can do, moving at that speed, that like billions of ton hiting a city(one ton is 2000 pounds)so a billion ton, that a force that is far more powerful then the largest nuclear explosion ever,no one can say when it well happen,i hope this was helpful.

A tsunami similar to the one that hit Indonesia can certainly occur and affect NYC. A shift / landslide on the continental shelf, a collapse of one of the volcanic islands on the east coase of the Atlantic, etc., all very possible. A 10-25 foot "surge" would not destory NYC, but certain cause $billions of damage and thousands of lives. Imagine what the flooded subway system would look like. A catastrophic tsunami formed by a comet as large as someone has suggested would destroy NYC, and also much of all cities on coastal waters, not to mention a significant climate change worldwide.

Not very likely, unless one of the Canary Islands blows up. Too many other landmasses around NYC for it to take the full brunt of one, even it did occur.
