Well I am a housewife....but we don't have any children. We are trying, but none as of right now. When my husband & I first dated and got married I did work also. But then he got on at a really good paying job and wanted to me be able to stay home if I wanted to. Its actually quite nice. I clean the house every day, take care of our 6 animals, do all the grocery shopping, laundry, housework, and have dinner ready for him every night when he gets home. To me, it is a full time job. He loves being able to provide for me, and I love being able to take care of him.

I'm a stay at home mom, because it is hard to find a job that pays enough money to pay for daycare, gas, a second car, and extra taxes. I worked until I had my baby, and then quit so my family could save money. When my son starts school again, I want to go back to work. Right now, I'm focused on a more important job--raising my child. If other people don't like that, it's their problem, not mine.

I think the percent depends on what income bracket the people fall into. Those in the lower income region don't really have that luxury. Its usually necessary for both of them to work. I'm sure the number increases once you get to people who earn higher incomes and can easily survive off one paycheck. From personal experience most women usually shift, they tend to work until the first child is born and then take time off until the child is old enough to go to school.

We're ALL housewives... We all live in homes (house) and we're all married (wife). I happen to be a housewife who works outside the home as well.
Why SHOULD a woman take a job if she and her husband are in agreement with her staying home? What business is it of YOURS whether they work or not?
Why do people worry so MUCH about married women/moms who don't work?
BUTT OUT, you're not paying the bills, it's none of your business.

Go to www.census.gov and make an inquiry there. I looked it up, but found nothing useful to this question. However, it's pretty safe to say that the majority of American women have a paying job.
I'm a Canadian student who intends to be a career woman, sans husband, sans children.
A lot of women believe that they will be able to depend on their husbands for as long as they live. One author claimed that anywhere from 66% to 75% of these women will end up struggling to make ends meet. Housewifery is OK, but unless the woman has her own money, she'll likely be done for.

If a mother wants to stay home she complains, badgers, lies, cheats, steals or whatever it takes to get her way.
If a mother wishes to return to work she complains, badgers, lies, cheats, steals or whatever it takes to get her way.
In all cases, American women are out of control
