Rent a 2 bedroom apartment in a big and expensive metropolitan area (rent $1000/month),
Work and live Monday to Friday.
And, Buy a small one bedroom house located in a small town 115 mile away from the big city (cost $60,000). This house is by a big lake with nice view. Go to the 'vacation house' for the weekend (Friday evening to Sunday afternoon) and then come back to City for the Mon-Friday work.

Will you do that?

Reason to do this is because of the unaffordable housing in the metropolitan area... besides, there's not much job opportunities in the small town.

Sounds great! But that 330-mile round-trip drive every weekend will be something that you might not be looking forward to. As well as the money spent on the gasoline.

But if you don't mind the drive and expense, go for it! :-)

I don't believe in wasting money on rent, so I'd probably either buy a small house in the city--in addition to the one in the small town--or rent an efficiency and spend the extra money on the house.

Yeah if you have the money, why not?? It's nice to have a house sometimes and then if your lifestyle changes you have some options like getting rid of the house or apartment whichever suits your needs then

My old boss did that. had a rental in the city and drove two and a halh hrs every weekend to the home they owned at the beach. Worked well for them but I would dread the commute every weekend.
