The number one reason cell phones are so popular is that the advertising was geared to appeal to teenagers driving need to be one of the popular group.
It will be interesting to see what will happen with cell phones now that it has been shown that cell phone towers are killing bees.

Because people like to feel important. If the things you're doing are important enough that they always have to be resolved RIGHTNOW and can't wait an hour for you to get home, it gives people a feeling of significance.
Also, people hate to be alone. Humans always desire contact with other humans.
Besides of course the fact that cell phones have become a status symbol rather than just an object of convenience. The newer your phone has, the more features it has, the more megapixels its camera has, the cooler you're considered to be.

Most people haven't learned to function alone. They are like dogs, they are pack animals. The phone is a comfort tool. They have no reason to live except to annoy other people and waste their time. I have a cell phone too so and my wife has one. It is for so I can find her if she gets lost, she is kind of disabled and we vacation sometimes. Drug dealers use them because the deals can't be traced. especially stolen ones. Illegal mexicans use trac phones because they can't be traced and they can talk to their family and use them to transfer money.
