The volume of a MP3 solely depends on the firmware installed.

I would reccomend getting a Rockbox compatible MP3, such as Ipod, Toshiba Gigabeat, Iriver etc and switch the firmware to Rockbox. Rockbox is an Open Source MP3 Replacement Firmware.

Rockbox removes the volume limitations on rockbox-compatible mp3s. With earphonesand volume maxxed out, it acts like speakers from across the room. That is AWESOME!!!

I have a Toshiba Gigabeat f20 with Rockbox and the volume level maxxes out at +6 db. There is a huge amount of equiliser configurations that can alter the sound quality. Now the latest Gigabeat x30 is 30GB and should cost $299 at its best price. Normal price is anything between 300 to 500

As someone else mentioned, get the Creative Zen or another creative mp3 player. This is from a company that has been specializing in Audio products and sound cards for over 10 years. Also, the kind of headphones you use will make a difference in the efficiency and loudness of the sound. The cheapie headphones that come with players will not let you appreciate the true sound quality. Get some good Sony headphones (MDR-V600 or MDR-V700) , Koss Portapro or Shure Earphones and you'll be happy!

and it also depends on the hardware capabilities. so far the one player i know that can get EXTREMELY loud with VERY little distortion or static is the Creative Zen Players. of course they are the best since Creative does specialize in making mp3 players and sound cards, i reccomend a Creative Zen Vision M or a Creative Zen v. very good player with VERY good sound quality. dont go for iPOds, they have very shitty sound quality , trust me i know,

I am not sure abt the loudness .. I think the sound system of Creative MP3's should be good .. You also will have a wide selection of MP3's .. But maybe the price will be above RM300 ..

What you need is a good pair of head phonnes. The bigger the speaker the bigger the Bass/sound. Don't use those cheap ear buds and headphones that come with the player though that crap away. My head phones cost me $20 at target - sony MDR-V150
