It depends on what you mean by gun control. If you have a system that stops a young mentally ill person from buying a gun with a mental health checks, police checks and residency verification, then yes gun control can be effective!
But if gun control means, the one who fires the gun first is the one that controls the situation, then it is a tragedy happening again in America.
But then, gun manufacturers don't like to think about that, nor do other Corporations that are selling dangerous products or services to people without any real controls! What do you think the meat processors think about testing for Mad Cow Disease on every cow?
They don't like it because they want to get the profits without having to pay the dollar price of testing. And we all know that raising taxes is a terrible thing even if it is a good idea and well effectively solve a major problem!

I am no lover of guns but think about the issue. Say a person wants to buy a gun but is turned down because of some domestic violance from 20 or so years ago. O K so he does not get a gun but a crook knows where to go to get the guns on the black market. What is the end result? Good people can't get a gun for some minor infraction from the past BUT the crook can.

Well it has in Australia no school massacres,no shopping center killings, no searching children for guns before school no accidental gunshot deaths.
I don't know where people get the idea that our gun crime rate has gone up because it hasn't maybe our drug crimes have but that is because of crystal meth and don't think we are alone there that's a universal problem.
We are allowed guns here we are just a bit more choosy who we give them to we have very strict rules and if you want a gun you have to apply and then wait for a cooling of period if that was the case with the Virgina Tec killer he would have not been able to walk in and buy one on the spur of the moment, but if you are sane and a upstanding citizen you can get one no worries you just have to wait until they find if you have ever been in a mental hospital or worse.

What do you mean by "gun control?" If you are saying to remove guns from private individuals, no, gun control will not work.
I have no problem with back ground checks. My understanding is doctors cannot submit their findings, so a background check is nothing more than checking to see if you are a convicted felon or if you are on the "watch list."
What I would like to see is more education. People buying guns for the first time should go through a safety class. This class should also include the legal aspects, observation of your surroundings, and shooting training.
And, I would like to see education/drills for violent situations. We have tornado and fire drills. First graders are taught the "stop, drop, and roll" drill. Yet, is society taught how to handle a violent situation at home, in public, or at school?

No! If criminals want to shoot people with guns, they will shoot them with guns whether guns are legal or not. Think about this. There's a criminal, and he wants to shoot someone and murder them. But then a law is passed making guns illegal. What's he to do? Say "Oh, darn! I was going to murder someone with a gun, but now it's against the law!"
I cannot tell you how many cases I have heard of people preventing crime because they had a gun and were able to protect themselves.
So, no, gun control does not prevent crime.

It prevents gun crimes to a certain extent, I guess you could say it prevents impulse crimes. So no gets killed over an argument at a drive through, but if someone really wants to commit a crime there going to do it no matter what.
And Mr. Perf I don't know where you get your demographics from but gun crimes in Australia have not skyrocketed, the exact opposite is true.

NO! I know for a fact that it does not make a difference what the law says an outlaw can find a gun.It is going to come down to fighting for our lives cause other people are coming into our spot ,tring to hurt us,that we need to review our laws,If we have no guns in our homes when there is a overtake, how do you plan to protect those you are suppose too?

Nope. Not anymore than drug control laws prevent drug use.
In fact, it would logically follow that more laws creates more crime. A side effect being that serious crimes are no longer taken seriously as it becomes more important to enforce laws which are effectually unenforceable because of a flawed logic generalizing that "lesser crimes lead to or contribute to more serious crimes." Of course, there seems to be a revenue factor involved in the current state of law enforcement.

Not really. All it does is prevent law abiding citizens the right to protect themselves and their property.
The majority of your criminals aren't going to buy their guns legally, as they don't they don't want a weapon that can be traced to them.
