Streep--Great range
DeNiro--Taxi Driver
Nicholson--He's just one of the coolest guys. Ever.
Pacino--I mean...he's Pacino

Nicholson always seems to be the same character in every movie he's in... I like to see him in movies, but he just seems always the same person in a different background.
Dustin and DeNiro have been very successfully versatile over the years, playing both good guys and bad guys... In fact, they are more dead even, talent-wise, than one followed by the other, in my opinion.
Pacino was a better actor when he was younger. He's good now, but, like Nicholson, doesn't change much from role to role, nowadays.

mmm pretty hard to differentiate between such talents.... but would probably put Pacino, then Hoffman, then Deniro, then Streep then Nicholson. but as you said, it is very subjective, so am i rating them in terms of talent or is it just my personal preference???

De Niro - Can't beat Casino and Good Fellas.
Pacino - Heat. Enough said there.
Nicholson - You can't handle the truth!! I just love his intensity. And he was great in As Good as it Gets. He actually made OCD look cool.
Hoffman - Rain Man
Streep - Doesn't belong in this list. I would substitute Willem Dafoe or some other old guy.

Well, they're probably all over-rated. But Streep is number one on my list because I loved her in Out of Africa and Heartburn.
