I have a chevy 350 in a 78 camaro, I rebuilt the engine and put in the car, I timed the distributor with the crank, and now I am trying to figure out the advance/retard on the distributor, all I can get out of it is the carb spitting fuel back up, what could cause this? If I installed the cam wrong could that have caused it? do the lifters need to be tightened or loosened maybe? anythoughts would be appreciated thanks in advance.

1) Vacuum line to distributor disconnected and plugged.
8 degrees BTDC.

2) Valve lash should be adjusted while the engine is running.
And can be very messy if you don't have the little clips to cover the rocker arms.

3) Are you 180 degrees off? Timed on exhaust stroke instead of compression stroke?
Swap the spark plug wires on the distributor cap across from each other.

Double Check Distributor Timing ,Valves Do Have To Be "Properly Adjusted Before And After Running(Very Important) Get Manual Out And READ IT...Before Ya Tear It Up......lol..Not Being Smart..But..It Is A Very Good Idea To Know how To Time An Engine Before Under Taking Up The Task Of Rebuilding One...Also If The Engine Has Adjustable Valves To Be Able To Perform This Task Too.Yes Chevy 350 Needs Valve Adjustment To Specification....lmao

It sounds like you have the intake valves staying open or closing too late in compression stroke. There must be a timing problem between the crank and the cam shafts. Distributor timing should not have any effect on fuel spillage.

Well there should be a mark on your harmonic balancer that will tell you how to timed it. also it should have a small dial bracket with numbers. if i remember correctly clockwise is advance and counter clockwise i retard, also check your firing order should be something like this 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2 and about 4 degrees before top dead center. check your vacuum advance see if still good, best way is to suck on it see if the diaphram still moves. well hope it helps.
